This is currently a non-research partnership focused on understanding and reducing communication gaps between school professionals and families (especially Spanish-speaking families), which have been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. We partner with school staff, teachers, administration, and families to learn more about communication breakdowns and work together in problem-solving to reduce these breakdowns. We are consistently interested in bringing in additional expertise and partnership in this work.
Currently, we assist with informal interpreting. Interpretation sessions focus on day-to-day school communication such as bridging communication to young students with limited English proficiency, helping schedule appointments with Spanish-speaking families, and communicating general information to and from families. If you have any questions about this work or more specifics about the expectations, please do not hesitate to reach out to Dr. Fitton for more information: FITTONL@mailbox.sc.edu
To contribute to this work, you will be required to pass a criminal background check and complete training in the ethical treatment of students in schools and human participants in research.
