Currently Recruiting: Undergraduate Students in Columbia, SC

Project Title:  Enhancing Understanding of Existing Bilingual Assessments: An Initial Evaluation of Psychometrics

Bilingual children being educated in the United States are at disproportionate risk for misidentification as having communication disorders compared to their monolingual peers. Dual language learners (DLLs), or children who are developing two languages at once, experience both over- and under-identification as having speech or language impairment. To reduce the risk of misidentification, it is essential to have valid and reliable assessment tools to assist in testing children appropriately. The purpose of this project, which is anticipated to start in the Spring of 2019, is to examine the functioning of the Bilingual English-Spanish Assessment (Peña et al., 2014). Students interested in working on this project are encouraged to contact me as soon as possible. I am particularly interested in working with students who speak Spanish and/or who come from lower-income backgrounds.

Project Tasks:
- Standardized test administration with young children
- Scoring and data entry
- Communication with teachers and families
- Additional opportunities may be made available for exceptional research assistants.

Additional Opportunities: Students

I just about always have research opportunities for students who speak Spanish, are interested in language sample analysis, and/or who are interested in issues related to cultural and linguistic diversity. Bonus points for students who have prior research experience, particularly with testing or data entry. If you have any of these skills, please do not hesitate to contact me.
