Maya Angelou "It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength."
I am incredibly excited to have started working as a post-doctoral scholar on the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative under Dr. Hugh Catts and Dr. Yaacov Petscher. Check out more information about the project on the Florida Center for Reading Research website. I'm working with Dr. Catts to develop items for the many subtests that will be included in the screening measure to be piloted with kindergartners this fall. Every day, I have the opportunity to think about the many factors that can influence how a child performs on any item on a test.
Specifically, I'm thinking more about how children's cultural and linguistic backgrounds influence how they do on these test items. We need tools that are valid for assessing children from diverse backgrounds and the advancements in voice recognition software may make it possible for this tool to be linguistically responsive. |
